Worked as the director of the rock band “Shonen Knife” before joining the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in 1984. Led policy-making for the fusion of communications and broadcasting and for the internet. Involved with the reorganization of the ministry under the Hashimoto reforms before resigning to move to the United States. Visiting Professor at the MIT Media Lab in 1998. Named executive director of the Stanford Japan Center in 2002. Received a PhD in Media and Governance. Professor at Keio University since 2006. Books and publications include “Contents and National Strategy” (Kadokawa-Books), “Ichiya Nakamura’s New Generation IT Business Evolution” (Discover 21), and “Digital Signage Strategy” (ASCII MEDIA WORKS).
