SAMCARA Lab is honored to have its project TAIKA recognized as a Finalist Project with Silver Medal distinction for Concept and Reflection at the Biodesign Challenge 2026 Summit in New York. TAIKA harnesses chemistry from spent mushroom substrate to create a sustainable, bio-derived fire‑retardant coating that buys precious time for wooden buildings during earthquakes and natural disasters, reducing flame spread and fume generation.

This achievement builds on SAMCARA’s ongoing work at Keio University Graduate School of Media Design to pioneer circular design and biodesign solutions for urban resilience and material innovation. The team’s recognition in Concept and Reflection highlights their commitment to pairing rigorous experimentation—such as optimizing silica–chitosan formulations for fire performance—with thoughtful engagement with Japan’s dense urban “mokumitsu” neighborhoods and the risks posed by the Nankai Trough earthquake.

We would also like to extend extra special thanks to Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology Department of Applied Chemistry, Associate Professor Akihiro Ogura for his collaboration with this project.
